On Disagreeing with Scott and Kotaku Simultaneously

Scott seems to think that the Call of Duty boys went a little too far.  Okay, so maybe “No Fear” and “No Rules” is a bit much.  That being said…

I’m an advertising major.  When I went to school, there were no game design degrees, and when I came out of school, We were still shaking off the Bush 41 recession (funny how history repeats itself). The first thing that happens in a recession is that companies cancel their advertising contracts, because then you can cut budget without laying people off.  So no ad companies were hiring junior guys, and through just plain blind luck I got into games for a living instead of writing toothpaste jingles. Mystery Stalker Cake!

Today, one of our artists got a cake from a mystery sender, which happened to contain a phone baked into it.

At first we were all excited, figuring it to be our game’s first crazy stalker fan.

Turns out, it was just a viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, a movie which seems to be getting a ton of ARG support behind it.

Kill Frag Dolls! Get Paid For It!

When reading this news story, it’s hard not to keep in mind that this was paid for by the company that shut down my project and laid off everyone. Perspective, and all that.

Ubisoft is giving $500 to anyone who beats the Frag Dolls (a team of girl gamers) at Rainbow Six Vegas. What could go wrong?

Well so far: 6 matches, 5 Frag Doll losses, 4 winners per match, 3 hours, 20 lucky gamers, and $10,000.  In English: Last night the Frag Dolls lost ten thousand dollars in three hours to twenty gamers. Ouch!

I Want Some Of What Sony Is Smoking

With Microsoft cornering the online console space, and Nintendo going for the unique control scheme, it seems that Sony has found it’s own niche in the console space: directly trying to corner the ‘What the Fuck’ market.

This can be the only possible explanation for some of the ads coming out of Sony in the last week. Most notably, this refers to the Creepy Ass Chucky Ad that played last night during the World Series: Kotaku has the vid there, as well as the commentary. Continue reading
